Six ports worth the passage

What each harbour actually offers, how long the ship stays and which excursions fit the shore time. Sailing dates are chosen around these windows, not the other way round.

Helsinki, Uusimaa, south coast

Uusimaa, south coast

Helsinki

Ships moor at the South Harbour, which puts the cathedral, the market hall and the ferry to Suomenlinna within ten minutes on foot. Arrive a day early and the design district is reachable by tram in fifteen minutes.

Best season
May to September for walking, December for the Christmas market
Shore time
Half day before boarding
  • Suomenlinna sea fortress
  • Design district walk
  • Archipelago sauna and dinner
Turku, Southwest Finland

Southwest Finland

Turku

The Aura river runs through the centre, with the medieval cathedral at one end and the harbour at the other. The archipelago ferry terminals and the ship quay sit on the same waterfront, which keeps transfers short.

June to August

Shore time Half day before boarding

  • Turku castle and cathedral
  • Riverbank food walk
  • Airisto evening boat
Naantali, Southwest Finland

Southwest Finland

Naantali

Naantali grew around a 15th century convent and kept its low wooden houses. The guest harbour is calm in most weather, and the walk to the spa park takes about twenty minutes.

June to August

Shore time 6 to 10 hours

  • Old town and convent church
  • Spa park walk
  • Island ferry to Luonnonmaa
Mariehamn, Aland, Aland Islands

Aland Islands

Mariehamn, Aland

Mariehamn was built around shipping, and the Pommern, a four-masted barque, still sits in the west harbour. The town is small enough to cross in twenty minutes, with the maritime museum and the shipyard quarter on the waterfront.

May to September

Shore time Full day or overnight

  • Pommern and maritime museum
  • Aland pancake tasting
  • Cycle to Kastelholm castle
Kemi and Lapland, Finnish Lapland

Finnish Lapland

Kemi and Lapland

Kemi sits at the northern end of the Bothnian Bay, where sea ice forms from December. The snow castle is rebuilt each winter, and the icebreaker harbour is a short transfer from the ship quay.

December to March for ice and aurora, June to July for midnight sun

Shore time Full day or overnight

  • Icebreaker cruise and ice floating
  • Snow castle
  • Aurora camp with a local guide
Porvoo, Uusimaa, south coast

Uusimaa, south coast

Porvoo

The old town climbs a low hill above the river, with the cathedral at the top and the red warehouses on the bank below. Most of the centre is closed to cars, and the craft shops stay open through the summer evenings.

May to September

Shore time 6 to 8 hours

  • Old town and cathedral
  • Ceramics workshop visit
  • River valley walk

When to sail, and what changes

Midnight sun, June to July

North of the Arctic Circle the sun stays above the horizon for weeks. Sailing dates in June and July are built around late evenings on deck.

Archipelago summer, June to August

The southern islands are warmest in July, with long daylight and most harbour cafes open. This is the busiest window for the Turku and Helsinki loops.

Aurora season, December to March

Clear, cold nights bring the best chance of northern lights. Winter sailings adjust around ice, so shore days can move at short notice.
